My Role: Design of CD Packaging / 20 page booklet insert / Posters / Video
When Marc O'Reilly first asked me to design the cd packaging for his debut album MY FRIEND MARX it was back in early 2007. Loose concepts behind the Robot characters came as a response to the title track where the protagonist meets a character in an early house bar, and goes on to describe the story of this extraordinary encounter involving visions of the future where squirrels fly and robots rule the world.
The Robots started off quite 'square' in design and I decided upon the red/yellow colour scheme as an attractive eye catching combination. However, Marc went to Melbourne, Australia to work for 6 months and it wasn't until Summer 2009 that I revisited the work and redesigned the 2 characters that now appear on the current album, making them softer and rounder with more personality.
A 20 page booklet accompanies the album featuring Marc's lyrics and beautiful black and white images taken by UK photographer Alexander Paton, and www.State.ie owner Roger Woolman. Marc is currently on tour in Ireland.
"My Friend Marx" - Animated Video
I art directed the video with Marc and Rory McGovern a 2nd year student Crawford School of Art & Design who then brought the robots to life using 'claymation'. This won best music video award at the DARE MEDIA - Underground Film Festival in Cork July 2011.
